Malta – A Small Island Nation With a BIG Spirit
Despite its small size, Malta, a treasure trove in the Mediterranean, is rapidly becoming a sought-after destination for people who are eager to get a taste of the peaceful culture. You’ll love living in Malta if you love culture, history, and not to mention excellent weather. A growing tourist destination year after year, Malta is located about 50 miles south of Sicily in the Mediterranean and is a small multi-island archipelago that boasts a Mediterranean climate, a top-ranked healthcare system, and an English-speaking population.
Expat Favourites:
The stunning capital, Valletta, a lively port city and one of the most popular destinations in Malta, is home to ancient architecture, elegant flagstone streets, a bustling pedestrian shopping area, exceptionally good restaurants, and an international community.
Just across the water from Valletta, you will find another expat-favorite- Sliema. There is a great deal of newly built property options and on the north shore of the main island, the seaside resorts attract its fair share of expats with its ocean-view promenades.
The northern island of Gozo offers a slower pace of life, for those looking to get away from it all. Gozo is also the perfect balance between tranquility and convenience, with the island’s capital, Victoria, being a lively place with shopping, restaurants, health facilities, and just about anything else you might need.
Affordable living:
One might think that living on a beautiful sun-soaked Mediterranean island is something only the very wealthy could afford. Not so in Malta. Your money can go surprisingly far, which is good considering that we’re talking about houses with a view of the Mediterranean. Of course, prices do fall if you’d prefer living inland or on the smaller island of Gozo. Groceries, dining out, and other common expenses cost far less than you might imagine. Also, given the island’s small size and reasonably priced transportation system, many expats happily live car-free, saving thousands on vehicle payments, insurance, and garage costs.
Entertainment & activities galore:
As a small nation, you’ll find that these islands offer a seemingly never-ending stream of activities and there is simply always something happening. Activities can range from snorkeling in crystal-blue waters, to exploring secluded coves, to sailing, canoeing, or kayaking, to exploring the Megalithic Temples, Roman ruins, medieval castles, World War II shelters, the glorious baroque churches, and so much more.
Malta boasts of a lively international community. Known to be a welcoming bunch, the expats groups regularly get together for coffee mornings, evening drinks, and dinners out and about. You’ll also find organizations by activity such as running clubs, horse riding clubs, books clubs, and others
Malta might be the smallest country in the European Union, but it has a big spirit and offers far more than its tiny size would suggest- spectacular centuries-old towns with every modern convenience, a wealth of year-round cultural activities and attractions, a large international community, and an affordable laidback lifestyle.
